Our Story
Serge Fabre, having moved to New Zealand from France, became owner/operator of MAKZ GEAR in 2017. He brings with him a wealth of experience. He started out with bikes around 13 years of age with his Dad and went on to become the youngest Kawasaki Dealer in France – so he’s been in and around this industry for most of his life!
Since 2017, the business has grown in multiple ways; a move to the current larger showroom, more staff to look after you and a greater product range for your selection.
MAKZ GEAR is the place to go for both motorcycle and jetski novices and fanatics - you’ll find what you’re looking for here. We really are your one stop shop for a good ride!
Team Effort
One of the things that makes us who we are, is we’re a team. This business is not about individuals, but rather the collective experience and knowledge of a hardworking and passionate team. We have our fingers firmly on the pulse of the latest and greatest machines. We pride ourselves on our longstanding reputation and excellent customer service. Our goal is to leave you satisfied with all you need for a smooth-running ride and taste of adventure!
People First, Always
While we love revs, the thrill of the ride and being outdoors, it’s you, our customers that come first. Making sure you’re well looked after and providing exactly what you need, is our main priority. The combination of our experience and taking the time to understand you and your needs, means we can recommend the best machine for you and no one else. We don’t stop there either. Once you have your machine, we provide ongoing support in regard to parts, accessories and servicing.

Serge Fabre
Owner/Operator
Serge’s journey started out over 35 years ago, working in a workshop as a mechanic in France. After owning a number of dealerships (including being the youngest Kawasaki dealer in France) he moved with his family to New Zealand in 2017 looking for a new adventure and different lifestyle. He found this when he moved to Tauranga and bought MAKZ GEAR. Serge has a huge amount of experience. He got involved in bikes at 13 years of age with this father and has raced both dirt and road bikes. These days, you’re more likely to find him out on the water on a ski. Serge loves the relaxed nature of the industry and the contact with customers. He’s proud that at MAKZ GEAR, people are not just customers, they become friends.
Colin Rhind
General Manager
Colin expertly performs the General Manager role, but to the team he’s often referred to as ‘Dad’. He has been riding bikes for over 40 years and has over 20 years experience on the mechanical and servicing side, so there’s very little Colin doesn’t know! He has enjoyed riding both road and off-road bikes over the years, but these days prefers dirt bikes…he even competed in the Vet Class MX recently. Colin is a real people person and enjoys working with a great team and making sure customers are always satisfied with their experience
at MAKZ GEAR.
Aaron Carmichael
Parts and Sales
Aaron has been around bikes since he was 4 years old and gained 16 years experience in parts and sales including working at a multi franchise dealership. He enjoys his role at MAKZ GEAR as he’s surrounded by bikes, jetskis and people, it’s a perfect job for him! Aaron has been involved in both road and off-road riding and competing. He now enjoys adventure riding and the odd MX trail ride. In the summer, he doesn’t mind taking the ski out for a spin either!
Danny Merriman
Mechanic
Danny is our resident mechanic, having been part of the MAKZ GEAR team for 9 years. He’s been riding bikes since he was 13 years of age and working on bikes since then, which was a natural progression into becoming a mechanic. He loves all things dirt bikes and likes to compete in MX. Danny loves when he diagnoses something tricky or complex on a machine as he finds it super rewarding!
