The 2024 690 SMC-R is driven by KTM’s LC4 692-693 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. It delivers strong power from low revs while retaining a free-revving nature at higher RPMs. Features like ride-by-wire throttle, twin-plug ignition, and a large 50 mm throttle body ensure sharp and responsive throttle control. The slipper/assist clutch (PASC) and a 6-speed gearbox with Quickshifter+ make gear changes smooth and precise, enhancing the ride feel while accelerating or decelerating aggressively. The motor also benefits from long service intervals, helping reduce ongoing running costs.

The chassis is built for supermoto performance: a light but strong chrome-moly steel tubular space frame with a self-supporting fuel tank keeps weight down and stiffness up. Front suspension uses a fully adjustable 48 mm WP APEX fork, while the rear features a WP APEX shock with Pro-Lever linkage, both tuned for supermoto handling. High-performance Brembo brakes (320 mm front disc with 4-piston radial caliper, 240 mm rear) provide excellent stopping power with good modulation. Spoked aluminium 17-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone S21 tires balance grip and agility on asphalt corners while giving enough robustness for the occasional road imperfection.

The 690 SMC-R offers sophisticated electronics: selectable ride modes (Street and Supermoto), cornering ABS with an option to disable rear ABS in Supermoto mode, traction control, and a full EMS (engine management system) allow riders to adapt the bike to different surfaces or riding styles. Ergonomics are similarly well sorted: a high seat height with a grippy new seat cover, wide tapered handlebars that are rubber-mounted to reduce vibration, compact footpegs with removable rubber inserts for comfort, and a slim front profile for maximum lean angle. Practical features like an under-seat airbox make maintenance easier, and the design puts the fuel tank in a load-bearing role in the subframe to reduce complexity and save weight.
